Professor Moffitt's research is on the economics of poverty and welfare programs for the poor. He has published research articles on all major U.S. welfare programs, has written surveys of the research literatures on them, and has edited volumes of papers summarizing those programs. He has studied the impact of programs on poverty rates, on the labor market and work incentives, and on family formation. He served on the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Panel on Reducing Child Poverty in the U.S. by 50 Percent in Ten Years whose Report was released in March 2019, which identified several programs which could reduce child poverty. He is a Research Affiliate of the U.S. Institute for Research on Poverty and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
